On the importance of a good instrument
How important is it for a performer to play on a good instrument? Or, in other words, to what degree does the value of our performance depend on the instrument we play on?
It is clear that a cheap beginner guitar is hard to compare with a concert instrument. But I think there are no professional guitarists who play concerts on these learning instruments – we all play on concert guitars.
So, the question has to be: what difference is there between a Kohno and a Ramirez? Between a Dammann and a Smallman?
We already can detect a very big and obvious difference: the price!
The price of concert guitars can vary from 1,000 euros up to 50,000 euros or even more.
And of course there is an obvious difference in quality of sound and playing feel; the more expensive instrument not always proving to be the better one.
But, let us be honest: by far the most important is our playing.
Any good player will be able to convince an audience on even a mediocre guitar.
Compared to our playing, the importance of an instrument is of small value.
But, of course, for a serious artist the smallest difference is of the greatest importance…
